Eco-friendly wedding stationery

Polka Dot Creations and eco-friendly wedding stationery

As a luxury stationer, I am often approached by couples wanting help with their wedding stationery but who are wanting to ensure that the products used are as eco-friendly as possible. Stationery items such as save the dates, invitations, orders of service, and table setting stationery are of course often made from card and paper products. There are plenty of sustainable stationery options available that are beautiful and also eco-friendly. Read on to find out more….

Paper

Paper and card are the standard materials used for most wedding stationery items. You can check with your stationer and ask them to source FSC Certified materials. The Forest Stewardship Council promotes responsible management of the world’s forests with ethically sourced wood fibre and water quality protection during manufacturing. Polka Dot Creations has access to a wide range of FSC Certified materials from the traditional to quirky and contemporary.

There are also some really exciting papers available that come from very unexpected sources…..

Banana skin paper uses the fibrous fruits’ skins to create a fantastic printable surface that helps eliminate food waste.

If that sounds surprising, you can also now get paper made from poo! Animal dung from elephants and reindeer can be blended with recycled paper to form new material. (Don’t worry, the papers are entirely odourless!) Elephant paper can be as much as 75% dung – given they are herbivores it is a great source of fibre which works really well for making paper.

Cotton

Cotton rag paper comes in a range of rough and smooth textures and is a popular choice of alternative paper. We source cotton rag paper that is handmade in India. Long cotton fibres are taken from garments such as cotton t-shirts, blended into a pulp and moulded into individually dried sheets of paper. This method recycles cotton bi-products from the textiles industry, and is available in a range of shades.

Flowers, Seeds and Leaves

Handmade paper is a great option for bohemian weddings and rustic countryside themes. At Polka Dot Creations we use air-dried seed papers that protect the grass and wildflower seeds within. This paper is biodegradable and plantable meaning your guests can take it home and put in their gardens as mementos of your special day. Papers can also include pressed flowers and petals, adding beautiful touches of colour and texture.

At Polka Dot Creations we also use skeleton leaves to create place cards. Using a combination of handmade torn edge paper, raffia ribbons and leaf skeletons, we make beautiful natural name cards. These intricate place cards are wonderful for seasonal table designs and we can incorporate organic silk ribbons for an elegant touch.

Fabric and Ribbons

Polka Dot Creations can make hanging fabric banners out of organic calico and natural linen. The banners are popular as welcome signs and table plans at wedding venues and can come in a range of sizes.

We can also provide organic hand-dyed silk ribbons that fit with your colour schemes for invitations and orders of service, and we are happy to liaise with your florist to ensure that we use the same ribbons that they incorporate into their bouquets, buttonholes and corsages should you require. Raffia is another popular choice.

Wood

Another eco-friendly way to invite your guests to your wedding is with the use of wooden invitations. With them being made from a renewable resource and a natural product they are one of the most environmentally friendly products that you can use for your stationery. Even the use of recycled wooden pallets is becoming increasingly popular to display your table plan, order of the day or welcome sign.

We think this demonstrates that there are a number of things you can do if you are looking to ensure that your wedding is as eco-friendly as possible. For more details on any of these eco-friendly wedding stationery products please get in touch with Polka Dot Creations.
